The fruit for Fonseca’s Vintage Portos is trod by foot in granite lagares on the estate. The wine is aged for two years in oak before being bottled unfiltered. Fonseca is a Port house renowned for consistency in quality and the lush, exotic style of its vintage releases. Encompassing three quintas across the Douro region, the house makes a variety of styles, ranging from the reserve ruby, Bin 27, to white ports and Tawny ports of various ages. Fonseca celebrated its bicentenary with a dinner at the Wallace Collection in London in June, at which both the 1985 and 1963 were served. Then in September, just as vintage was starting, I travelled to Oporto to reacquaint myself with the company’s range, perhaps the most accomplished of any Port shipper.
