Space syntax is based on configurational theory of space and attempts to decode spatial formations and their impacts on human activity. By the development of new techniques for representing and analysing space, space syntax appears as a tool for architects to explore their design ideas and understand possible effects of their proposals. Another important aspect of space syntax is that it focuses both on human behaviour and the relational network of a meronymy (Kozikoğlu and Dursun, 2015). Analyses of space syntax demonstrate that it can be used to analyse current spatial constructs in building and urban scale, and to test design suggestions (Dursun, 2007). Dursun; Space Syntax in Architectural Design Proceedings, 6th International Space Syntax Symposium, İstanbul, 2007 056-04 which helps architects to find out how well their designs might work Space syntax developed from academic origins, but the steady growth of interest from planners, developers and architects created a demand for consultancy on “live” projects. To do so, UCL established Space Syntax Limited as a university “spin out” company. This research-focused Master's offers students the opportunity to develop their own research in the service of building a better built environment for society. Samantha Li studied BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design at Canterbury School of Architecture, UCA. She continued her interest in analytical spatial behaviour and the relationship between interior and urban environments during her studies on the MSc Space Syntax: Architecture and Cities programme, at The Bartlett, University College London. Space syntax originating from architecture offers alternative and non-subjective options towards discovering what is hidden or implicit in space research and analyses across many disciplines. This ultimately strengthens the theoretical base of architecture, housing research and practice within and even beyond the built environment. 6.0Appendix 2019-9-1 · 1. Introduction. Space syntax was developed by Bill Hillier, Julienne Hanson, and colleagues at the Bartlett, University College London in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a tool to help architects and urban planners simulate the likely social effects of their designs primarily at the urban scale at the Bartlett Unit for Architectural studies, University College London.
