Too Late the Phalarope. Too Late the Phalarope is the second novel of Alan Paton, the South African author who is best known for writing Cry, the Beloved Country. It was published in 1953, and was the last novel he published before Ah, but Your Land is Beautiful in 1981. He is on surer ground when it comes to universal themes of sin and redemption. To Late the Phalarope' isn't as explicitly. Paton tends to be viewed largely as a political novelist, which is understandable given his role as a founder of the Liberal Party and his role as a witness for the defence at the Rivonia Trial. Alan Paton obviously loved South Africa.
